A subcapsular splenic hematoma is a very rare hemorrhagic complication of pancreatitis. We report here on a case of pseudocyst with a large subcapsular splenic hematoma in a 43-year-old man who presented with severe left flank pain for one week. Despite the initial conservative treatment consisting of pain control, bowel rest, intravenous fluids and antibiotics, the pain was not relieved. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) was performed, and it showed a pseudocyst that was increasing in size with a large subcapsular splenic hematoma measuring 6×13 cm compared to the images at admission. Ultrasonography (US)-guided percutaneous drainage was performed without any complications, and splenectomy was avoided. After the discharge, the patient remained asymptomatic for eight months. We suggest that percutaneous drainage of a large subcapsular hematoma complicating pancreatitis might be a useful treatment option in selected patients. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2011;57:258-261)
The concept of self efficacy, originally theorized by Bandura, has been applied to a wide variety of fields including education, psychology, and business. There has been steady effort to develop relevant scales to operationalize and measure self efficacy. This article reports on the results from an analysis of Kurbanoglu's ILSES (Information Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale), the only reported such scale in the area of information literacy. Over 400 university students responded to the ILSES survey consisting of 40 items grouped in six categories. The main analysis used was factor analysis. The results show high degree of internal consistency of the items included. However, the factors derived from the study differ significantly from the factors in the original study. Overall, these factors seem to reflect the heuristic nature of students' information seeking and use patterns, favoring Internet resources and instant gratification.
At concentrations with little or no cytotoxicity, C. arvensis extract indicates the ability of high DPPH radical scavenging, inhibited tyrosinase activity, and decreased melanin content. The treatment of B16F10 cells with C. arvensis extract suppressed the protein expression of tyrosinase a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that C. arvensis extract inhibits melanin synthesis by inhibiting tyrosinase expression and tyrosinase activity. In addition, C. arvensis extract showed antimicrobial activities against bacteria and yeast. These results indicate that C. arvensis extract may serve as nutraceutical and cosmeceutical agents.
This experiment was aimed at investigating the effects of dietary supplementation with fermented rice bran (FRB) or fermented broken rice (FBR) on egg-laying performance, egg quality, blood parameters, and cholesterol level in egg yolk of Hy-Line Brown egg-laying hens. Altogether, 144 Hy-Line Brown egg-laying hens (32-week-old) were randomly allocated to one of 4 dietary treatment groups, with 4 replicates per treatment. Of them, 3 treatments diets were prepared by supplementing the basal diet with 0.1% probiotics (PRO), 1% fermented rice bran (FRB), or 1% fermented broken rice (FBR) at the expense of corn. Hen-day egg production was higher (P<0.05) in PRO and FRB treatment groups than in the basal treatment groups. However, feed intake, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio did not differ among the treatment groups. Additionally, supplementation with FRB or FBR did not affect eggshell strength, eggshell thickness, egg yolk color, and Haugh unit during the feeding trial. There was no significant difference in leukocyte count. Total cholesterol level was lower (P<0.05) in the FRB treatment group than in the basal treatment groups. Asparate aminotransferase, alanine transferase, glucose, and albumin levels were unaffected by dietary supplementation with FRB or FBR. Egg yolk cholesterol level was lower (P<0.05) in the FRB and FBR treatment groups than in the basal treatment groups. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with FRB or FBR improved egg-laying performance, and reduced the levels of total serum cholesterol and cholesterol in egg yolk of Hy-Line Brown egg-laying hens.(Key words: Hy-Line Brown laying hens, laying performance, fermented rice bran, fermented broken rice, total cholesterol) † To whom correspondence should be addressed : magic100@korea.kr
Health insurance big data not only provide real-world evidence of unmet needs in actual clinical practice but also of breakthroughs in the medical industry which will shape the future of health care. Big data are also expected to transform the existing medical paradigm and provide a truly personalized medical age. However, questions about research through the collection and utilization of various big data in various fields have also been raised because quality limitations cannot be overlooked. Therefore, many challenges remain to be overcome in the use of big data research as a basis for changing medical practice. Intervention and interpretation by clinical medical experts are required in judging the scientific trustworthiness of the big data analysis process and the validity of the results. Therefore, healthcare big data research cannot achieve its goal by the efforts of researchers alone. Teams of data analysis scientists, epidemiologists, statistics experts, and clinical researchers are required to collaborate closely with team members, from the design phase to expert consultation, through regular meetings. In addition, it is necessary, in the creation of a healthier community, to cooperate with government agencies that provide data based on the whole nation or the world's population, as well as interest groups representing the people, and policy-making organizations. In this paper, we describe the knowledge, practical clinical applications, and future research directions and prospects for the next phase of health care, from the design of clinical research using health insurance big data to report writing.
