This paper aims to provide an overview of the experimental and simulation works focused on the detection, localisation and assessment of various defects in pipes by applying fast-screening guided ultrasonic wave techniques that have been used in the oil and gas industries over the past 20 years. Major emphasis is placed on limitations, capabilities, defect detection in coated buried pipes under pressure and corrosion monitoring using different commercial guided wave (GW) systems, approaches to simulation techniques such as the finite element method (FEM), wave mode selection, excitation and collection, GW attenuation, signal processing and different types of GW transducers. The effects of defect parameters on reflection coefficients are also discussed in terms of different simulation studies and experimental verifications.

Government advertising in Canada has a long history and has been an important adjunct in fostering values of national unity. This paper examines several significant campaigns: early 20th century immigration advertising, patriation of the Canadian constitution in the 1980s and, more recently, Olympic advertising in 1998. It attempts to demonstrate that the use of state advertising in Canada is unique in helping foster a view of Canadian citizenship and the development of national myths. Moreover, advertising in Canada has been a way to respond to the claims of a vocal sub‐minority. Copyright © 2003 Henry Stewart Publications

The frequency dependences of the reflection coefficients at gradual step-down axisymmetric defects were experimentally evaluated for the investigation of the reflection phenomena of the T(0,1) mode guided waves. Different frequency dependences were observed depending on the axial profile of the defect. A mathematical model using the characteristic acoustic impedance for calculating the reflection coefficients at axisymmetric defects was introduced. The reflection coefficients for the gradual step-down axisymmetric defects were confirmed to be in good agreement with the calculation results. By utilizing the mathematical model, a reflection mechanism was explained precisely and was verified. An inverse problem analysis for estimating the shape of an axisymmetric defect was also proposed based on the experimental reflection coefficients as a function of frequency together with the calculation model. Experimental verification of the proposed estimation method was performed using circular concave axisymmetric defects inside pipe specimens. The estimation results and accuracy were discussed in terms of the relation between the frequency range and the axial length of the defects.
