125 Jahre Ophthalmopathologie in Tübingen - Wandel der Zeiten und der Befundspektren

Abstract: The beginning of ophthalmopathological activities at the University Eye Clinic Tübingen, Germany, can be dated back to the year 1868, as at this time the continuous counting of investigated, ophthalmological specimens was started. So the ophthalmopathological department in Tübingen will be 125 years old in 1993. In a review its history is described with particular regard to the first period and the change in the kind and frequence of diagnoses.

“…These developments are reflected in the collection of findings and specimens from the Ophthalmology Department of the University Medical Center Freiburg: 10 specimens were archived during the 5-year period from 1945 – 1949, 4 and 5 specimens respectively were archived in the 1950s and 1960s, and only 2 specimens in total have been archived during the 42 years since 1980. Similarly, a reappraisal of the Stock collection in Tübingen revealed a decline after 1940 in the number of specimens such as, for example, those obtained from lacrimal sac excisions for TB 12 . History is also echoed in the Freiburg patient histories: there is repeated mention of blast injuries, shell splinters, etc.…”
