“…Ar/Ar dating was performed for the basaltic rocks of 215 the Bakony-Balaton Upland volcanic fields that corroborated the reliability of the former 216 K/Ar data (Wijbrans et al, 2007). In contrast, the new Ar/Ar age data (Panaiotu et al, 2013) 217 refined significantly the former knowledge (Panaiotu et al, 2004) on the temporal evolution 218 of the Perşani volcanic field. So far, the available K/Ar data base provides a solid framework 219 for the temporal evolution of the alkaline basaltic volcanism in the Pannonian basin, although 220 more careful studies are necessary to define the recurrence rates in individual volcanic fields 221 more precisely and constrain the eruption age of the youngest volcanic episodes.…”

“…For studies accepted in PSV10, we do not exclude individual sites based on VGP colatitude, but we have explicitly excluded those studies or parts thereof that targeted excursional field states. For example, Panaiotu et al () preferentially sampled a series of lavas emplaced during the Cobb Mountain normal polarity subchron as part of their paleosecular variation study in the Persani Mountains, and subsequently reported some transitional directions. We chose to keep the Panaiotu et al () study in PSV10, but we excluded sites that were from the targeted subchron sampling effort.…”

We chose to keep the Panaiotu et al () study in PSV10, but we excluded sites that were from the targeted subchron sampling effort. Although exclusion of transitional studies is an imperfect solutions we can assess its impact by making a crude estimate of the percentage of time the field might spend in transition, and comparing this with the percentage of such sites in PSV10.…”

“…The presence of numerous mantle xenoliths (Falus et al, 2008; Vaselli et al, 1995) in many of the PVF basalts makes the “archive” of mantle material at PVF even more appealing. A recent high precision Ar‐Ar study (Panaiotu et al, 2013) resolved the chronology of various basalts in the PVF in great detail. Earlier geochemical‐petrologic studies of the PVF (Downes et al, 1995; Harangi et al, 2013) report high‐quality data but are difficult to place in the temporal progression established by Panaiotu et al (2013).…”

On the other hand, basalt petrology and especially those studies targeting dynamic processes in the mantle require understanding of the temporal evolution at the scale of the volcanic field (Blondes et al, 2008).…”
