Article citation info: (*) Tekst artykułu w polskiej wersji językowej dostępny w elektronicznym wydaniu kwartalnika na stronie www.ein.org.pl IntroductionPatrol and intervention cars are used in regions threatened by terrorism for purposes such as:patrolling areas where there is a risk of fire attacks and explo-• sions of explosive charges; intervention activities, in particular combating terrorist groups; • peace-keeping operations, separating belligerents, and restoring • and maintaining public order; transporting officers and other persons and cargoes requiring • special protection; transporting and ensuring the functioning of devices and appara-• tus used for reconnaissance, identification, and recording.As for the detonation of small fragmentation explosive charges, i.e.: anti-personnel mines, hand grenades, and improvised charges, two major types of impact that endanger the lives and health of personnel can be distinguished. These are: the impact of fragments and the impact of the shock wave. The most unfavourable situation is an under-vehicle explosion. Due to the small distance from the target (at the moment, the clearance in passenger off-road vehicles is approx. 0.3÷0.5 m), fragments hit the floor material, which is pre-loaded with the shock wave. Very frequently, in such types of cars, the personnel keep their legs directly on the floor and the seats are made of thin textiles.Requirements for the ballistic protection of cars should be considered in parallel with requirements concerning their mobility [15]. This necessitates the use of light materials for ballistic protection covers. On the other hand, such protections are usually required to perform the function of structural components, e.g. due to the manner of their installation, which is why the materials should be characterised by appropriate strength and rigidity. Modern materials for automotive applications, including ballistic covers for special cars, need to satisfy the requirements of multifunctionality and cost-effectiveness in the areas of production, operation, and disposal [9,10,11,25,29].The purpose of the study was to develop an additional, self-supporting ballistic cover for car bottoms, mounted on the outside to prevent the perforation of the base floor. In currently-used cars, the floor is usually made of ordinary steel sheets having a thickness of 1÷1.5 mm. Szudrowicz M. A hybrid nylon 6,6 short glass/carbon fiber composite has been studied. The effect of reprocessing on the microstructure and mechanical properties was evaluated for injection-molded products. Fiber size distribution, molecular weight of matrix, thermal transitions, Young modulus and impact strength are among the properties evaluated during nine reprocessing cycles by injection molding. For the first five injection cycles an increase in tensile strength, Young modulus and impact strength are observed whereas molecular weight and average fibers-size are decreased. Reprocessing after 5 cycles led to a decrease in mechanical properties. SEM images show that the matrix first recovers from its fractures (up to 5 cycles) and after that, fractures again accompanied by an increased fiber pull-out.

Impact behavior of carbon fiber/polyethylene fiber hybrid composite: The effect of surface treatment of polyethylene fiber

Hybrid composites were prepared by adding one or two plies of polyethylene (PE) fabric to the bottom side of four-ply carbon fiber/vinylester composites. The effect of the surface treatment of PE fiber on the impact properties of carbon fiber/PE fiber hybrid composites was investigated using oxygen plasma, y-MPS, and y-MPSmodified polybutadiene (PB/y-MPS) as surface modifiers. Carbon fiber/vinylester composite exhibited brittle failure with cross-shaped crack at the back side. The addition of PE fabric on the bottom side resulted in a change of the impact behavior of hybrid composites. After hybridization, the absorption of much impact energy was attributed to a considerable degree of plastic deformation in PE plies and the delamination at the interface between carbon and PE layer, However, the surface treatment of PE fiber reduced the impact energy of composites with restriction of deformation at the interface between the carbon and the PE layer. Moreover, the addition of a treated PE layer decreased the degree of deformation with a daggershaped deformation zone at the back side. The extent of the deformation area had a significant effect on the impact energy of the hybrid composites.
