A 1MA, variable risetime pulse generator for high energy density plasma research

Abstract: COBRA is a 0.5 Omega pulse generator driving loads of order 10 nH inductance to >1 MA current. The design is based on independently timed, laser-triggered switching of four water pulse-forming lines whose outputs are added in parallel to drive the load current pulse. The detailed design and operation of the switching to give a wide variety of current pulse shapes and rise times from 95 to 230 ns is described. The design and operation of a simple inductive load voltage monitor are described which allows good ac… Show more

“…These plasmas are accelerated toward the array axis by magnetic pressure and accumulate there to form M A N U S C R I P T A C C E P T E D ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT a precursor column, while the cold-dense wire cores are stable in their original positions and keep ablating. Experimental results show that the basic processes of wire-array ablation on the 20-MA Z machine [32] are similar to that on the smaller current facilities such as ANGARA [33], MAGPIE [34] and COBRA [35]. The ablation rate of wire core is axially nonuniform, and the ablated plasmas will carry a significant fraction of current.…”

“…In our experimental setup, a thin metallic foil on the order of 10 lm thick is stretched onto the anode of a pulsed power generator such as COBRA (Ref. 5) or MAGPIE. 6 The current flows radially through the foil and converges to a stainless steel pin connected to the generator cathode by a brass electrode.…”
