Although the Internet of things (IoT), cloud computing (CC), and Big Data (BGD) are three different approaches that have evolved independently of each other over time; however, with time, they are becoming increasingly interconnected. The convergence of IoT, CC, and BGD provides new opportunities in various real-time applications, including telecommunication, healthcare, business, education, science, and engineering. Together, these approaches are facing various challenges during data gathering, processing, and management. The focus of this research paper is to pinpoint the emerging trends in IoT, CC, and BGD. The convergence of these approaches and their impact on various real-time applications, benefits, and challenges associated with all these approaches, current industry trends, and future research directions with especial focus on the healthcare domain. The paper also provides a conceptual framework that integrates IoT, CC, and BGD and provides an IoT centric cloud infrastructure using BGD. Finally, this paper summarizes by providing directions for researchers and practitioners about how to leverage the benefits of combining these approaches.

FIDChain: Federated Intrusion Detection System for Blockchain-Enabled IoT Healthcare Applications

Recently, there has been considerable growth in the internet of things (IoT)-based healthcare applications; however, they suffer from a lack of intrusion detection systems (IDS). Leveraging recent technologies, such as machine learning (ML), edge computing, and blockchain, can provide suitable and strong security solutions for preserving the privacy of medical data. In this paper, FIDChain IDS is proposed using lightweight artificial neural networks (ANN) in a federated learning (FL) way to ensure healthcare data privacy preservation with the advances of blockchain technology that provides a distributed ledger for aggregating the local weights and then broadcasting the updated global weights after averaging, which prevents poisoning attacks and provides full transparency and immutability over the distributed system with negligible overhead. Applying the detection model at the edge protects the cloud if an attack happens, as it blocks the data from its gateway with smaller detection time and lesser computing and processing capacity as FL deals with smaller sets of data. The ANN and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models were evaluated using the BoT-IoT dataset. The results show that ANN models have higher accuracy and better performance with the heterogeneity of data in IoT devices, such as intensive care unit (ICU) in healthcare systems. Testing the FIDChain with different datasets (CSE-CIC-IDS2018, Bot Net IoT, and KDD Cup 99) reveals that the BoT-IoT dataset has the most stable and accurate results for testing IoT applications, such as those used in healthcare systems.

The urban population, worldwide, is growing exponentially and with it the demand for information on pollution levels, vehicle traffic, or available parking, giving rise to citizens connected to their environment. This article presents an experimental long range (LoRa) and low power consumption network, with a combination of static and mobile wireless sensors (hybrid architecture) to tune and validate concentrator placement, to obtain a large coverage in an urban environment. A mobile node has been used, carrying a gateway and various sensors. The Activation By Personalization (ABP) mode has been used, justified for urban applications requiring multicasting. This allows to compare the coverage of each static gateway, being able to make practical decisions about its location. With this methodology, it has been possible to provide service to the city of Malaga, through a single concentrator node. The information acquired is synchronized in an external database, to monitor the data in real time, being able to geolocate the dataframes through web mapping services. This work presents the development and implementation of a hybrid wireless sensor network of long range and low power, configured and tuned to achieve efficient performance in a mid-size city, and tested in experiments in a real urban environment.
