A case of mucinous cystadenoma arising in the palate

Abstract: Mucinous cystadenoma (MCA) usually occurs in the appendix, ovary, kidney, and pancreas. MCA is sometimes considered a borderline tumor. In the oral and maxillofacial region, MCA most commonly occurs in the parotid glands and the minor salivary glands; however, the frequency is low. We describe a 65-year-old woman who had a slowly enlarging tumor, 10mm in diameter, in the hard palate. Magnetic resonance images of the lesion revealed hyperintensity on both Ti-weighted and T2-weighted images. The tumor was succes… Show more

“…The histopathological findings in our case coincide with those defined for mucinous cystadenoma [10,18]. Papillary Oncocytic Cystadenoma is composed of papillary-cystic proliferation of a single or double layered oncocytic epithelium, superficially resembling a Warthin's tumour without a lymphoid stroma [6,19].…”

“…To our knowledge, immunohistochemistry has been done for only two cases of cystadenoma out of which one was papillary [28] and the other was mucinous [18]. In our case, the immunoreactivity was positive for cytokeratin markers, confirming that the tumor was mucinous and derived from salivary glands of hard palate.…”

“…According to the 1972 WHO classification 32) , papillary cystadenoma is included in the "Other adenoma" category of monomorphic adenomas. In the field of oral surgery, it was first recognized as a salivary gland tumor in the 1991 WHO classification 26) , and catego rized into subtypes of papillary cystadenoma and mucinous cystadenoma according to its histopathological characteristics 26,31) . In the 2005 classification, however, these subtypes were eliminated, and cystadenoma was classi fied as a form of benign epithelial tumor 2) .…”

“…This pathology tends to arise in the ovaries or pancreas. In the head and neck region, cystadenoma is occasionally seen in the parotid or minor salivary glands 25,31) , but is extremely uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors 13,21) .…”
