A Comparison of the Acute Haemodynamic Effects of Thiopentone, Methohexitone and Propanidid in the Dog

Abstract: The acute haemodynamic efifects of thiopentone, methohexitone and propanidid have been compared in anaesthetized dogs. All three drugs caused a reduction in arterial blood pressure and minor changes in cardiac output, but whereas thiopentone and methohexitone had similar effects propanidid was found to be three times as potent as thiopentone in its effect upon arterial systolic pressure. Thiopentone and methohexitone had slight effects upon right ventricular pressures, whilst propanidid markedly increased righ… Show more

“…Since the introduction of methohexitone to clinical practice in 1956, there have been many studies of its haemodynamic effects. Consistent findings include a reduction in arterial pressure and an increase in heart rate (Dobkin and Wyant, 1957;Sankawa, 1965;Conway, Ellis and King, 1968;Rowlands et al 3 1967) whilst variable changes have been reported in cardiac output and total peripheral resistance (Dobkin and Wyant, 1957;Sankawa, 1965;Rowlands et al, 1967). The present study was designed to repeat these measurements and to examine the effect of methohexitone on myocardial blood flow, myocardial vascular resistance and myocardial oxygen consumption and extraction.…”

“…Sankawa (1965) found hypotension lasting approximately 2 min with doses of 20-25 mg/kg whilst Conway, Ellis and King (1968) found a reduction in systolic blood pressure of 34-47% which lasted 1-2 min following doses of 10-20 mg/kg. In many human studies, transient hypotension has also been reported (Conway and Ellis, 1970).…”

“…The reported hypotensive action of propanidid has led some authors to advocate against its widespread use (Conway and Ellis, 1970), whilst the antiarrhythmic properties have led others to imply a superiority over the barbiturates for induction of anaesthesia (Johnstone and Barron, 1968). However, there are insufficient data to allow full assessment of the cardiovascular action of this agent.…”

“…Subjects were randomly allocated via 3/3 balanced Latin square design; 6 patients were recruited in two blocks and assigned their treatments. Since there was an odd number of the visit in the study, orthogonal Latin square was used in which each column represented the order of anesthetic agents (A, B, C) given to each subject to achieve a balance [13].…”
