A Conceptual Framework to Evaluate the Environmental Sustainability Performance of Mining Industrial Facilities

Abstract: The aim of this study is to strengthen the capacity of mining industries to assess and improve their environmental sustainability performance through the introduction of a relevant framework. Specific assessment categories and respective indicators were selected according to predefined steps. Sustainability threshold values were identified for each indicator to enable the comparison of the facility’s performance with a sustainability reference value. The application of the framework results in the extraction o… Show more

“…Mining activities exert an inherently high impact on the environment, and as such a common framework for responsible mining is urgently needed [1]. Among the various pollution sources related to mining activities, acid mine drainage (AMD) is created in areas that have previously been mined and that contain pyritic materials in spoil piles or mine shafts; iron pyrite in the tailings chemically reacts with oxygen and water, facilitated by the Thiobacillus sp.…”

“…In fact, Maletič et al [25] emphasize the importance of the development of risk management measures, which contribute positively to a better sustainability performance of the physical asset management system. Our approach is in line with other frameworks for measuring industrial sustainability performance [25,[57][58][59]. A scientific study of framework addressing the production sector [47] identified seven different frameworks [2,8,9,27,46,[60][61][62].…”

“…Non-metallic minerals are expected to grow significantly (especially when it comes to building materials: sand, gravel, and others). It emphasizes the advantages of the 4th industrial revolution that could know and develop new forms: the use of online meetings, tools for telework work and others [2,3]. Thus, the processes will be automated, and robots and data centers will be a necessity.…”
