The study investigates systematicity in English interlanguage of dependent prepositions among L1 The findings demonstrate that systematicity occurred in the learners' English usage of prepositions of all such types, possibly due to negative transfer from the learners' native language. Also, the L2 learners tended to exhibit such systematicity irrespective of their English proficiency level. It may be assumed that the cognitive aspect of L2 learners' working memory is involved in processing the usage of the four types of English dependent prepositions. The results of the study are expected to shed light on the problems of L2 English interlanguage of dependent prepositions among L1 Thai learners.

Compound Prepositions Used by Iraqi EFL University Students

There is no logical reason why one compound preposition is right in a certain context, whereas another one is wrong. To use compound prepositions correctly is difficult because most of them have several functions. In addition, different prepositions have sometimes similar uses. Such prepositions cause difficulty to Iraqi EFL university students because syllabus designers and teachers do not concentrate on such sort of prepositions. This study aims at identifying and analyzing the errors Iraqi EFL university students encounter in using such prepositions and finding the reasons behind students' errors. A diagnostic test is designed and applied to a sample of 100 Iraqi EFL university students at their third year. In the light of the students' responses, it can be concluded that the majority of Iraqi EFL university students fail to recognize and produce such propositions. Moreover, they do not realize the function of such prepositions because they do not discern their meanings and most books of grammar do not list their meanings or uses. As such, the researcher uses Hornby (2006) to clarify their meanings. The subjects' errors are attributed to the following factors: (i) interlingual transfer, (ii) intralingual transfer, (iii) context of learning, and (iv) communication strategies.

Abstract-The present study is a corpus-based study which aims to investigate the occurrence of salient first language (Chinese 1 ) features found in learners' second language (English) written productions. AntConc (version 3.2.4) was adopted to analyze the learners' written data and to establish various categories of preposition misuses and L1 features. Tango 2 was employed to provide suggestions for correction. Essentially, findings demonstrate that EFL learners may unconsciously produce L2 writings with L1 characteristics in their sentence productions. Results showed that the ten most frequently misused prepositions were by, at, in, to, for, on, about, of, with, and as. According to the results, it is suggested that, in regard to writing, teachers and educators can teach the use of prepositions through collocations to facilitate learners' knowledge and understanding for different prepositions through different contexts. The significance of the study is to raise learners' awareness as well as to provide reference for instruction for language teachers and educators.
