A Digital Communication Assistance Tool (DCAT) to Obtain Medical History from Foreign-Language Patients: Development and Pilot Testing in a Primary Health Care Center for Refugees

Abstract: Background: Language barriers play a critical role in the treatment of migrant and refugee patients. Examples include a tablet-based app for medical history taking for refugees and asylum seekers in a German transit camp, which was developed and piloted in a family doctor surgery setting [13,14]; a speech-enabled, fixed-phrase translator was found to be a good alternative to collecting information if interpreters are not available in an emergency room setting [15].
