A Direct Three-Phase AC–AC Matrix Converter-Based Wireless Power Transfer System for Electric Vehicles

Abstract: For the bidirectional wireless power transfer system of electric vehicles, the topology proposed in this paper includes a direct three-phase AC–AC matrix converter as the pre-stage main circuit, a bilateral inductor–capacitor–capacitor–inductor (LCCL) as the resonance compensation network, and a full-bridge converter as the latter stage circuit. According to the characteristics of the system topology, a new control strategy is proposed based on the de-re-coupling method. The control principle of the coordinati… Show more

“…Although different realizations have been proposed, there is always room for an innovative low-cost realization with additional feature [20][23]. For single phase AC-AC conversion, these converters suffer from a current sag phenomenon during input mains zero crossing which is well documented in literature [13][18]. The current sag results in a drop of transmitted power even though the load is present.…”

“…This is a major technical bottleneck, limiting employment of single-phase matrix converter topologies in practical products. Researchers have proposed three phase power supply as a solution to this problem [17], [18]. But single-phase wireless power transfer systems make up a major segment of wireless power transfer products, ranging from consumer battery charging to level 2 electric vehicle battery charging.…”

“…For the aforementioned reasons, environmental and operational factors impacting the longevity of power converters, particularly high-power ones, are given special consideration, with a focus on DC-link capacitors [21]. An intriguing way to lower the price and size of power converters is to produce them without huge capacitors in their design (DC-link) [22,23]. Another complexity of two-stage DC-link AC/AC converters is the use of complicated pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques.…”

“…The popularity of the matrix converter increased in the last years [1,2] due to the possible advantages over the standard back-to-back converters (BBC). The improvement in the semiconductor industry, especially in the field of Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors and the small footprint of the component, has opened new ways to build a compact and high-power density matrix converter.…”
