A double‐blind trial of 1% ketoconazole shampoo versus placebo in the treatment of dandruff

Abstract: Summary. The efficacy of 1% ketoconazole shampoo in the treatment of dandruff was tested in a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled trial with 176 patients. The application of the shampoo twice weekly gave a good or excellent result in 74% of the patients treated with ketoconazole versus 20% of the patients treated with placebo after 2 weeks. After 4 weeks these results were 80% versus 23%. The shampoo was well tolerated. Only one patient in the ketoconazole group stopped treatment because of greasy hair. Zusammen… Show more

“…Comprehensive scalp microbiome comparisons have also been performed between cohorts of healthy individuals and dandruff/seborrhoeic dermatitis patients . However, these studies do not take into account individual susceptibility and may be subject to a significant placebo effect bias given that anti‐dandruff efficacy is still reported in 23–55% of the placebo treated subjects . Hence, it is also useful to study the in vitro efficacy of the antifungal agents and other shampoo formulation components on the growth of Malassezia and Staphylococcus prior to accessing their performance in clinical trial.…”

“…One trial ( Herrera-Arellano 2004 ) compared ketoconazole shampoo versus Solanum chrysotricum shampoo. Although 8% (4/51) of those taking ketoconazole failed to achieve complete resolution compared with 13% (7/52) taking Solanum chrysotricum , the difference was not statistically significant (RR 0.58, 95% CI 0.18 to 1.87) (Analysis 7.1).…”
