A Framework for Exploring Churches/Monuments/Museums of Byzantine Cultural Influence Exploiting Immersive Technologies in Real-Time Networked Environments

Abstract: The unique art that was developed in Byzantine times is widely accepted as a precursor to the Renaissance and is still evident in monuments either from or influenced by the Byzantium. Visiting such a site is a unique experience due to the lavishly painted interior for both tourists and scholars. Taking advantage of the emerging 5G technologies, cloud/fog computing, and Augmented/Mixed Reality mechanisms, a common smart device (e.g., smartphone, tablet) could be employed to give a better experience to the end-u… Show more

“…AR has been labelled an emerging technology [25] but there are still barriers for both VR and AR that have to be considered before full-scale adoption will happen [26]. VR and AR applications in multidisciplinary field have been best motivated by the following two scenarios: (1) when a phenomenon or an object cannot be easily recreated, such as already non-existing historical buildings; or (2) when a visit in reality is not possible due to a large distance or state borders.…”

“…Virtual museums may use game technologies for digital representation of the cultural heritage and industrial sites [40,45]. Cultural heritage sites are good candidates for both detailed multidimensional geometric documentation and realistic interactive visualization in VR applications [26,46,47]. VR and AR simulation technologies create an interactive environment in which individuals may experience and appreciate intangible and physical cultural assets and historical locations [48].…”

“…This engagement could be seen as sense of immersion; however, it is semi immersion as user couldn't feel or explore the real situation. The evolution of immersive technology such as augmented reality (AR) [2], virtual reality (VR) [3][4][5], and extended reality (XR) [6] has change the visitors' perspective in viewing and appreciating history since never seen artifacts, buildings, historians and moments could come alive surround them. Virtual museum exploration [7] mediated by VR head mounted display [8] enabling individuals to virtually visit distant and inaccessible museums, historical sites [4,5], and art gallery [4].…”
