A highly sensitive multi-dimensional motion measurement system using a spherical reflector

Abstract: A new measurement system is proposed that can detect three-degree-of-freedom (three-DOF) translational motions of an object with high sensitivity. Its measurement method is based on an optical lever technique using a spherical reflector. The spherical reflector is mounted on an object whose motion is to be measured. It reflects each laser beam, generated from two laser sources, in two different directions, depending on the motion of the object of interest. The reflected beam is then detected by two PSDs. Since… Show more

“…To avoid disturbance by a strong EMF and to get stable and sensitive deformation by force inputs, carbon fiber plates (carbon fiber prepreg, E: 234 GPa, tensile strength: 4.4 GPa) of a high yield stress are used for every spring part [12]. The developed elastic spring parts are shown in figure 3.…”

“…The first transducing unit optically transduces 2-DOF displacements of the first detecting part by the force components F x and F y . This unit uses a spherical mirror and multi-receiving fibers on the mirror to sense the 2-DOF translational displacement while keeping the transducing unit small by arranging the fibers in parallel, which is inspired from our research paper in which a spherical mirror was used with two two-dimensional PSDs for 3-DOF translational displacement measurement due to its high sensitivity characteristics [12,13]. Ten fiber optic lines (SK-20, a multimode step index fiber, and a core radius of 486 μm) are used for this unit, one for emitting the light beam and nine for receiving the reflected light, as shown in figure 5.…”

“…There are also other methods to improve the measurement sensitivity based on the optical lever mechanism. Kwon et al developed a measurement sensitivity improvement method using a spherical reflector in a fine displacement measurement system using a laser and PSD [17]. However, this is not suitable for measuring the straightness errors of a linear stage because the linear stage has a relatively long driving distance.…”
