A Literature Review of Transmission Effectiveness and Electromagnetic Compatibility in Home Telemedicine Environments to Evaluate Safety and Security

Abstract: The study reveals that there are numerous publications on telemedicine and home-monitoring systems using wireless networks. However, literature on effectiveness in terms of connectivity and transmission problems and electromagnetic interferences is limited. From the collected studies, it can be concluded that there are transmission failures, low-coverage areas, errors in the transmission of packets, and so on. Moreover, cases of serious interferences in medical instruments have also been reported. These facts … Show more

“…The limited number of reported studies addressing safety issues in Telehealth [18,19], and more specifically the impact of carers on its successful implementation [13] restrict discussion about how the results from this study relate to previous findings. However, the results do work towards addressing questions in the literature about the role that carers play in the safe implementation of home Telehealth including inaccurate reading rates from caregiver error and delayed or missing information [18].…”

“…When erroneous results are received by the telehealth care team, an assessment of transmission errors is warranted. 30 Regardless of the device used, establishing adequate telephone or Internet access with sufficient signal strength should be discussed with the patient to ensure a clear communication channel. Moreover, the patient's monitoring device, technical skills, and preferences should be thoroughly assessed and continuously monitored.…”
