A natural antioxidant extract from Sempervivum tectorum

Abstract: The superoxide scavenging activity of lyophiliized extract of Sempemivum tectorum (StF1) was determined by electron paramagnetic resonance spin trapping methods. The extract inhibited ascorbic acid induced and F&I3 stimulated lipid peroxidation and was concentration dependent in the liver microsomal fraction of rats.

“…Our earlier experiments showed no need to extend the animal number from 5 to a greater number, since the laboratory parameters (ALP, GOT, GPT, GGT, total cholesterine, triglyceride, bilirubin, etc.) within 1 group were almost the same, and the standard deviations of the values were relatively small (Blázovics et al, , 1993a(Blázovics et al, , 1993bKocsis et al, 2002).…”

“…The benefits of juice and tea prepared from the leaves of S. tectorum can be attributed to the presence of many bioactive compounds, such as oligomeric and polymeric polyphenols, phenol carboxylic acids, ascorbic, citric malic acids, flavones-and flavonol-mono-and diglycosides with kaempferol and quercetin as aglycones, tannins, coumarines, oligo-and polysaccharides. 8 The antioxidant activity and antinociceptive effect of S. tectorum extracts were shown both in vivo and in vitro. 7 Glycosides of kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, scutellarein, myricetin, herbacetin, proanthocyanidins (prodelphinidin and procyanidin) and delphinidol were isolated from Sempervivum sp.…”

“…tectorum contains flavonoids such as kaempferol [5,6] . Blazovics et al [28] emphasized that the active compound of Sempervivum tectorum extract were able to influence the changed cellular redox status in mucosa of all parts of the intestinal tract in experimental bowel disease and pointed out the protective effect of natural polyphenols and flavonoids of S. tectorum in thus disease.…”

“…The extract from this plant contains approximately 20 different flavones and flavonol mono-and diglycosides [2][3][4]. The main flavonoid glycoside is kaempferol [4][5][6].…”
