A New Design of a Single-Device 3D Hall Sensor: Cross-Shaped 3D Hall Sensor

Abstract: In this paper, a new single-device three-dimensional (3D) Hall sensor called a cross-shaped 3D Hall device is designed based on the five-contact vertical Hall device. Some of the device parameters are based on 0.18 μm BCDliteTM technology provided by GLOBALFOUNDRIES. Two-dimensional (2D) and 3D finite element models implemented in COMSOL are applied to understand the device behavior under a constant magnetic field. Besides this, the influence of the sensing contacts, active region’s depth, and P-type layers ar… Show more

“…One of the key characteristics of the Hall sensor is the effect of offset voltage and sensitivity on temperature. With the advancement of fabrication technology, different offset compensation methods are known, such as calibration, device symmetry, mutual compensation, and reduction of rotating current offset [ 33 , 34 ]. Figure 9 shows the relationship between the offset voltage, sensitivity, and temperature of the S-size Hall sensor when the working current is 10 mA.…”

“…This means that the magnetic field direction should be known in advance and it should not change during the measurement. This problem can be solved by using three orthogonally positioned sensors [ 4 , 14 ], which allow the measurement of not only the magnitude, but also the direction of the magnetic field. This is especially essential in certain industrial, medical, robotic, or virtual reality applications.…”

“…This is especially essential in certain industrial, medical, robotic, or virtual reality applications. A three-dimensional magnetic field sensor based on a single spin–orbit torque device [ 15 ], a three-dimensional magnetometer based on a simple Hall device in a planar geometry [ 14 , 16 ], or a three-axis induction sensor [ 17 ] can be used for this purpose. However, such a solution is good for measuring relatively long-pulsed magnetic fields.…”

“…In recent years, in order to improve the performance of the device, five-contact, four-contact and six-contact structures have gradually appeared [5,6,7,8,9], but they still have problems of high offset voltage and low sensitivity. Aiming to solve these problems, this paper proposes a double three-contact vertical Hall device structure and its conformal mapping analysis method to improve the performance of the device.…”
