Background: Recurrent aphthous ulceration is one of the most common inflammatory, ulcerative oral mucosal conditions. Most of the currently available treatments aim at symptomatic relief, thereby improving the quality of life. Aims and Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of allicin in mouthrinse and systemic form in the management of minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Materials and Methods: A total of 42 patients with minor RAS were randomly divided into Group A (allicin mouth rinse-21) and Group B (allicin capsules-21). The baseline parameters of the ulcer, i.e., size, pain, and erythema were recorded on the day 1, day 4, and day 7, respectively. The recurrence rate of the ulcer was evaluated for 6 months at monthly intervals. Results: In both groups, the marked improvement was observed in the parameters during the follow-up visits. Both forms of allicin were proved to be effective but no statistically significant difference was observed. Recurrence was observed in both the groups. Conclusion: Both forms of allicin were found to be equally effective in the management of minor RAS with a good safety record. Both were not found to be effective in preventing the recurrence.

Introduction: Garlic is a natural herb which can be used to be a good alternative treatment because cheap and safe. Garlic contains allicin which may has act antibacterial and antiinflammatory effect. Moreover, garlic extract has a good biocompatibility and can stimulate cell growth. Does garlic extract biocompatible and can stimulate cell growth that is seen from the proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts and how its work will be studied.Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the biocompatibility of garlic extract by observing the viability and proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts in vitro.Methods: Biocompatibility test was conducted using serial concentration of garlic extract. Human gingival fibroblasts was seeded into 96 microwell plate with density of 2x103 cells, added with the fourteen serial concentration of garlic extract, and incubated in 37o C and 5% CO2for 24, 48 and 72 hours. MTT assay was used to analyze the viability and proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal Wallis and U Mann-Whitney test.Results: The result showed that in each time of observation, there is no significant difference in viability fibroblast (p>0,05), but there are significant difference between time of observation at 24, 48, and 72 hours (p <0.05).Data showed that all concentration of garlic extract increased the viability and proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts.Conclusions: The ethanolic garlic extract has a good biocompatibility to human gingival fibroblasts culture cell and can stimulate the proliferation of human gingival fibroblast.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(4) 2018 p.556-561

Objetivos: Descrever as características e os principais achados relatados na literatura quanto à provável etiologia e tratamentos das lesões causadas pela Estomatite Aftosa Recorrente (EAR). Métodos:Realizou-se a revisão da literatura nas bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e LILACS, no período de tempo do ano de 2005 a 2012. Utilizaram-se, isoladamente e em combinação, os descritores a seguir: Stomatitis, Aphthous; Oral Ulcer; Risk Factors e Therapeutics. Resultados: A patogênese da estomatite aftosa recorrente ainda continua indefinida, havendo confirmação científica quanto à sua relação com fatores imunológicos e mutações genéticas. Os procedimentos realizados e recursos utilizados para o tratamento das lesões são paliativos, no intuito de aliviar a dor, não existindo uma terapêutica de cura. Conclusão: Por ser a etiologia da EAR ainda incerta, o tratamento atual das lesões é bastante variado,e baseia-se no alívio dos sintomas da doença, variando, desde o uso de produtos naturais, como a própolis, passando por anti-inflamatórios, até à aplicação do laser de baixa potência.
