A Note on Brain Actuated Spelling with the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface

Abstract: Abstract. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are systems capable of decoding neural activity in real time, thereby allowing a computer application to be directly controlled by the brain. Since the characteristics of such direct brain-tocomputer interaction are limited in several aspects, one major challenge in BCI research is intelligent front-end design. Here we present the mental text entry application 'Hex-o-Spell' which incorporates principles of Human-Computer Interaction research into BCI feedback design. … Show more

“…Moreover, myoelectric potential may corrupt EEG signals. To overcome this problem, gaze independent ERP-spellers such as GeoSpell, Center speller, and Hex-o-Spell have been proposed [4,5,30,31]. These methods exhibit comparable or slightly better performance than the P300 speller (up to 15% improvement), whereas the proposed method exhibits a 40% improvement in terms of ITR comparison.…”

“…Pour piloter cette interface de communication présentée dans (Blankertz et al, 2006b;Blankertz et al, 2007), l'utilisateur doit imaginer deux mouvements que sont le mouvement de la main droite et le mouvement du pied droit. L'interface utilisateur, illustrée sur la figure 4, est composée de 6 hexagones contenant chacun 5 symboles (lettres ou signes de ponctuation), entourant un cercle dans lequel se trouve une flèche dont le déplace-ment circulaire permet la saisie du texte.…”

“…BCI systems are used in numerous applications such as: speller applications [4], [5] and [8], controlling a wheelchair [6], prosthesis [9] or a cursor on a screen [10], and also for multimedia [11] and virtual reality [12]. One of the most important features in a BCI system is represented by acquisition.…”
