This work investigated the seasonal variations in biosynthetic path selectivity of nine individual flavonoids, and content and antioxidant activity of three major metabolites in Tetrastigma hemsleyanum. The results revealed that under conditions of precipitation (2.0~6.6 mm), temperature (17.5~24.1°C), humidity (67.3~80.2%) and sunshine duration (3.4~5.8 h) in April and May, the total content of flavonoids reached higher levels between 282 and 394.5 μg/g; in the second half of April with the highest accumulation of flavonoids, the production selectivity (PS) of isoorientin, orientin, rutin, isoquercitin, kaempferol-3-0-rutinoside, astragalin, quercetin, apigenin and kaempferol were 0.30, 0.06, 0.07, 0.07, 0.00, 0.04, 0.38, 0.05 and 0.03, respectively; also according to the reaction network consisting of three main pathways for flavonoids syntheses in T. hemsleyanum, the selectivity of reaction Path II to synthesize quercetin, isoquercitin and rutin in April, May and June fluctuated between 0.52 and 0.66, much higher than that of reaction Path I or Path III.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with pattern recognition technique has become an important type of non-destructive discriminant method. This review first introduces the basic structure of the qualitative analysis process based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Then, the main pretreatment methods of NIRS data processing are investigated. Principles and recent developments of traditional pattern recognition methods based on NIRS are introduced, including some shallow learning machines and clustering analysis methods. Moreover, the newly developed deep learning methods and their applications of food quality analysis are surveyed, including convolutional neural network (CNN), one-dimensional CNN, and two-dimensional CNN. Finally, several applications of these pattern recognition techniques based on NIRS are compared. The deficiencies of the existing pattern recognition methods and future research directions are also reviewed.

Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels & Gilg (TDG), the family member of Vitaceae, is a traditional herbal medicine in China. The root of TDG can be immediately used after cleaning the muddy soil, and can be dehydrated for dry use. TDG is able to be collected all year round, which is commonly used in the treatment of hepatitis, infantile high fever, snake bite, etc. Based on phytochemistry, the chemical components of TDG are divided into flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenes, steroids, polysaccharide, and other compounds, showing many pharmacological effects which include anti-tumor, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, and immunomodulatory activity, as well as other activities. Currently, TDG involves some problems of the reduction of wild resources, the backward processing methods, and storage difficulties as well as the imperfection of detection methods. Therefore, this review summarizes the literature of the past 20 years, and the purpose of this review is to summarize the recent researches on the phytochemistry, pharmacology, quality control, and clinical application of TDG. The above discussions provide new insights for the future research on TDG.
