A pipelined configurable gate array for embedded processors

Abstract: In recent years the challenge of high performance, low power retargettable embedded system has been faced with different technological and architectural solutions. In this paper we present a new configurable unit explicitly designed to implement additional reconfigurable pipelined datapaths, suitable for the design of reconfigurable processors. A VLIW reconfigurable processor has been implemented on silicon in a standard 0.18 µm CMOS technology to prove the effectiveness of the proposed unit. Testing on a sign… Show more

“…An efficient and easy integration of a reconfigurable block inside a processor core is normally a hard task because of the intensive interaction between the two parts. In the case of the PiCoGA, the adoption of a clear computational model and a fixed frequency approach allowed quite an easy integration of the array, with only slight modifications of the original design of the processor [4].…”

“…Based on the original computational model [4], in this paper we present a new embedded datapath, called PiCoGA-II, where the architecture has been completely redesigned adopting innovative solutions in order to obtain a dense and fast multi-context reconfigurable device.…”

“…This technique has been extensively applied in the design of the PiCoGA configurable device [15], which has been implemented on silicon in 0.13µm STMicroelectronics technology. Though the dual threshold approach has been adopted, yet considerable power dissipation due to leakage remains, which will considerably increase scaling to technology below 90nm.…”
