A Review of Data-Driven Decision-Making Methods for Industry 4.0 Maintenance Applications

Abstract: Decision-making for manufacturing and maintenance operations is benefiting from the advanced sensor infrastructure of Industry 4.0, enabling the use of algorithms that analyze data, predict emerging situations, and recommend mitigating actions. The current paper reviews the literature on data-driven decision-making in maintenance and outlines directions for future research towards data-driven decision-making for Industry 4.0 maintenance applications. The main research directions include the coupling of decisio… Show more

“…Challenges faced by stakeholders and the awareness of social and environmental issues and uncertainty are factors that change the way business is done in economic activity. These challenges are the impulse for making decisions under uncertain conditions in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) [1,2]. I4.0 refers to many IT issues combining engineering, information technology and management knowledge.…”

“…Modern algorithms, data storage, and computing power make it possible to not only analyze past behavior, but to anticipate future behavior of industrial equipment with reasonable confidence [1][2][3]. Anticipating future failures is, therefore, a topic that has been receiving increasingly more attention from researchers.…”

“…The term big data mainly refers to the huge amount of data being continuously generated [1]. The technological developments society is facing, such as IoT, cloud computing, social networks, and mobile devices, among others, are the main reasons for this growth, leading to Industry 4.0 [2,3]. However, big data includes not only the volume but also the variety and velocity, among other aspects, involved in concepts that are still being defined [4][5][6].…”
