A Review of Potential New Diagnostic Modalities for Caries Lesions

Abstract: This paper aims to present a simple overview of potential new diagnostic methods for dental caries. There are several novel methods of caries detection (with potential application to diagnosis) which have been proposed in the last few years, in addition to those that are gaining some commercial exposure and clinical acceptance. For the most part, these methods have been demonstrated in laboratories and are generally many years away from routine clinical application. They include multi-photon imaging, infrared … Show more

“…37 Whatever numerical values given by the device, 35,36 visual inspection remains an essential component in making the final decision: to drill or not to drill. Indeed it is more the complexity of the shape, depth and the width of the grooves which governs clinical decision, meaning that before the diagnostic step the pits need to be perfectly clean.…”

“…These and other emerging methods have been reviewed in recent papers. 2,3 Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a candidate method for early caries detection. It is a technique that can accomplish with light what visual inspection and probing with a sharp dental explorer are designed to do but in a nonsubjective manner.…”
