A Simple Constant‐Force Pocket Probe

Abstract: A constant‐force pocket probe is constructed by application of a constant‐force spring. This is wound on two cylinders in reverse‐winding mode. As the distance to the probe top is constant, a constant force is obtained. Very little experience is needed to master the rotating of the handle while using the probe.

“…Patients met the following inclusion criteria: type 1 diabetes mellitus (World Health Organization 1985); age between 18 and 60 years; no other drugs except insulin; at least 1 healthy periodontal pocket (pocket depth <3 mm, not bleeding 30 s after probing with a constant-force periodontal probe calibrated at 0.75 N; Brodontic, Arthodent, Culemborg. The Netherlands; Borsboom et al 1981) and one diseased periodontal pocket (pocket depth >4 mm, bleeding on probing). Bleeding was scored as either absent or present, according to the periodontal pocket bleeding index (PPBI) devised by Van der Velden (1979).…”

“…Forces differed between examiners, and when different regions of the mouth were probed (24, 25, 36). Force controlled probes have been proposed to reduce these possible sources of error (12, 14, 15, 28, 60, 77, 93, 96).…”

“…The pocket probing depth was measured using a modified Williams probe (Hu-Friedy) applying a constant probing force of 0.5 N (cross section of the probe tip 0.5 mm); probing pressure 250 N/cm- (Tromp et al 1979, Borsboom et al 1981).…”
