A Simple Spectrophotometric Determination of Some Phenothiazine Drugs in Pharmaceutical Samples

Abstract: A new, simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of some phenothiazine drugs has been developed. The proposed method is based on the reaction of promethazine hydrochloride (PH), chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPH), triflupromazine hydrochloride (TPH), fluphenazine hydrochloride (FPH), trifluoperazine hydrochloride (TFPH), perazine dimaleate (PDM) and prochlorperazine maleate (PCPM) with iron(III) and a subsequent reaction with ferricyanide in an acetic acid medium to yield Prussian bl… Show more

“…Methods A and B are based on the formation of tris(o-phenanthroline)-iron(II) or tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)-iron(II) following the reaction of ETD with Fe 3+ -o-phen or Fe 3+ -bipy respectively. The reaction proceeds through the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , with the subsequent formation of an intense orange-red colouration attributable to the complex (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). The absorption spectra of the coloured complexes under optimum conditions were scanned in double beam mode against a reagent blank over the range 400-900 nm, and recorded according to general procedures.…”

“…It is widely used to control some psychotic disturbances such as depression, agitation, anxiety, psychosis and acute confusional state. Different methods have been reported for the determination of TFP in products and biological samples such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), 2,3 spectrophotometry, [4][5][6] fluorometry, 7 capillary electrophoresis, 8 and voltammetry. 9 However, many of these methods are complicated and time consuming, or require expensive equipment.…”

“…From a bioanalytical and clinical point of view, sensitive and accurate methods are needed to monitor chlorpromazine in pharmaceuticals and biological fluids for quality assurance in preparations and for obtaining optimum therapeutic concentrations. Although many methods have been reported for this purpose [1][2][3][4][5][6], the selective procedures require relatively extensive sample preparation and are time-consuming, while complicated instruments are used when high sensitivity is desired.…”
