A statistical investigation of normal regional intra-subject heterogeneity of brain metabolism and perfusion by F-18 FDG and O-15 H2O PET imaging

Abstract: BackgroundThe definite evaluation of the regional cerebral heterogeneity using perfusion and metabolism by a single modality of PET imaging has not been well addressed. Thus a statistical analysis of voxel variables from identical brain regions on metabolic and perfusion PET images was carried out to determine characteristics of the regional heterogeneity of F-18 FDG and O-15 H2O cerebral uptake in normal subjects.MethodsFourteen normal subjects with normal CT and/or MRI and physical examination including MMSE… Show more

“…The overall correct diagnosis rate of visual analysis of early phase images was 77 % (10/ 13, Table 3), which is higher than that of a previous study with F-18 FDG-PET (50 %) [37]. This could be related to tracerspecific properties of F-18 FDG that showed relatively decreased uptake in the cerebellum even in the normal group, mismatching with relatively higher perfusion in the cerebellum [39].…”

“…For the purpose of obtaining more accurate tumor contours and volume during TGV calculation, we referred to CT images and PET/CT fusion images rather than PET images alone. We measured and analyzed both brain SUVmax and SUVavg in this study, because heterogeneous metabolic distributions are physiologically observed in the brain and voxel histograms of FDG in the normal brain are non-Gaussian [13]; thus, SUVmax may be meaningful as well as SUVavg.…”

“…The influx rate measure, K 1 , indicates regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) [14] which is tightly coupled to glucose metabolism [15,16]. Recently, studies have shown that the amyloid tracer 11 C-PIB was able to provide extra perfusion information from the regional CBF estimate R 1 [17] and summed early time frame images [18], in addition to the amyloid binding information.…”
