A Study of the Behaviour of Water Droplets Under the Influence of Uniform Electric Field in Epoxy Resin Samples

Abstract: Water droplets on the surface of epoxy resin samples were investigated under the influence of uniform electric fields. Several parameters of water droplets were investigated wrt the flashover voltage of the epoxy resin samples, such as water conductivity, droplet volume, number of droplets as well as the positioning of the droplets regarding the electrodes. The droplet behavior is affected by the above mentioned parameters. Perhaps the most striking conclusion is that the flashover voltage depends more on the … Show more

“…The experimental results presented here indicate that there is a relationship between flashover voltage and the above mentioned parameters. The effect of water conductivity, surface roughness, droplet volume and number of droplets was studied elsewhere with both traditional polymers materials and with nanocomposite materials [7][8][9][10][11][12]. The results of the present study are qualitatively not that different from the experimental results of the references [7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

The results of the present study are qualitatively not that different from the experimental results of the references [7][8][9][10][11][12]. One may object to the fact that in this paper only mica sheets were investigated and not mica sheets impregnated with epoxy resin.…”

“…If the results of Figure 6 and Figure 7 are compared with those of pure epoxy resin (i.e. without any nanoparticles, Figure 8 [15]), it is evident that the addition of nanoparticles improves the flashover voltage of epoxy resin.…”

“…This fact may be explained as the effect of progressive, amplified polymerization of the epoxy resin. The increasing polymerization of resins due to the influence of electric and radiation fields is a well known and well described phenomenon [12][13][14][15][16]. Therefore -it is neither surprising nor connected to the deterioration of the properties of the resin.…”
