A transdisciplinary research of coastal fisheries co-management: the case of the hairtail Trichiurus japonicus trolling line fishery around the Bungo Channel, Japan

Abstract: effects of various management scenarios were evaluated by the operating model. We found that co-ordinated management by both the trolling line fishery and purse seiners in the neighbouring prefecture was required to achieve targets. Two realistic scenarios are recommended: a conservative scenario that could achieve targets even with few strong year classes, and an adaptive scenario that protects strong year classes, but relies on a higher frequency of these. We shared these results with the local fishers and g… Show more

“…Considering this, one important area that JFRA (and any other marine/fisheries research organizations) needs is to reconnect science and public interest through strengthening human dimension works and science communication. Even though our analysis of the last 15 years' performance of JFRA did not detect it, there are a few transdisciplinary works among JFRA multidisciplinary scientists, Government (particularly Fisheries Agency), and resource users (fishers) Makino et al, 2017;(Watari et al, 2017;Hirose et al, 2017). It usually involves prefectural fisheries institutions as key counterparts which can function as knowledge translators (Sato et al, 2018).…”

“…Although it is difficult to obtain consensus among different types of fisheries working in different areas, early implementation of management strategies like this will ultimately contribute to more rapid recovery and sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources. Using the stock structure and resource management results of this study, we elsewhere discuss the development of effective fishing gear [22] and a transdisciplinary approach to coastal fisheries co-management [23] for improved resource management.…”

“…Thus, there are more than twice as many boxes of king-size hairtail (8 individuals or fewer/box) as mini-size hairtail (21-25 individuals/box) if the same numbers of fish in each size class are caught. Larger hairtail command a higher price; for example, the price of a box of king-size fish is more than three times that of a box of mini-size fish [18], thus the price of a king-size fish is more than six times that of a mini-size fish. By using type-2 and type-3, fewer mini-and small-size fish and more large-and king-size fish were caught, so the value of the catch increased.…”

“…By using type-2 and type-3, fewer mini-and small-size fish and more large-and king-size fish were caught, so the value of the catch increased. The growth rate of hairtail is relatively rapid, and mini-size fish reach large and king size within 1 or 2 years [8,18], thus use of type-2 and type-3 improves conditions for hairtail growth with limited effects on the income of fisher households.…”
