We analyze change in variable subject/verb and noun phrase concord in Rio de Janeiro Portuguese using trend samples from 1980 and 1999/2000. Plural marked forms exhibit increased frequency in this period, reversing earlier trends toward loss or stability in a development typical of flows and counterflows in the community. The directionality of most structural and social dimensions does not change, but age patterns shift. Our aim is to investigate how groups of speakers evolve over time. Comparison of same-age groups at different moments does not yield insight and is not conducive to apprehending patterns of evolution because speakers move from one age group to another. We set up age cohorts so as to sample virtually the same universes. Examining age cohorts, we see increased frequency of number concord, although the original pattern of relative usage is preserved. Speakers are on the move, but constrained by social patterns in which they are situated. The pattern is broken precisely by those who were not in it, the unborn in the 1980s, who reverse direction dramatically toward increased usage of concord.

“…En el campo científico de la Lingüística, el tema de las formas de tratamiento ha recibido extensiva atención investigativa, ya sea considerando el contraste entre diferentes sistemas lingüísticos GILMAN, 2003GILMAN, [1960; KIM, 2015;OLIVEIRA, 2009;PEREIRA;PONTES, 2015), orientado a la variación intralingüística (CALDERÓN CAMPOS, 2010;FONTANELLA DE WEINBERG, 1999;SCHERRE;YACOVENCO, 2011), dedicado a la variación y cambio desde la perspectiva diacrónica (BERTOLOTTI, 2015;FARACO, 1996;JONGE;NIEUWENHUIJSEN, 2009) o, por fin, dedicado a la relación del fenómeno con las estructuras sociales (BIDERMAN, 1972(BIDERMAN, -1973GILMAN, 2003GILMAN, [1960). Ao assumir a inexistência de uma sinonímia pura entre duas línguas naturais, nos indagamos sobre a abrangência desse postulado a unidades linguísticas que agregam informação gramatical, como é o caso de duas formas pronominais de segunda pessoa. A partir dessa consideração inicial, o presente artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre os seguintes questionamentos: (i) quais significados podem ser verificados em dicionários monolíngues a respeito dos pronomes de tratamento singular do espanhol; (ii) que relações é possível estabelecer entre o significado léxico e a dêixis social vinculada pelas formas pronominais de segunda pessoa; e (iii) que impactos traz o fenômeno ao ofício da tradução. O debate substancialmente teórico aqui proposto se fundamenta tanto no campo da Linguística como no dos Estudos da Tradução recobrando teorias sobre dêixis social, cortesia verbal e postulados da Tradutologia.

This chapter aims to highlight some uses of pronominal address forms (tu, você, vocês and vós [‘you’ sg+pl]) in European Portuguese and compare them to Brazilian Portuguese, based on speakers’ perceptions which express their pragmatic awareness. The data were collected on the internet, from Facebook posts. An online linguistic survey on this matter was conducted to complement the data. Some examples were also collected from public speeches covering various discourse genres. Our findings show that (i) the speakers have highly varied metalinguistic and metapragmatic knowledge regarding the uses of the pronominal address systems in both varieties, (ii) knowledge of the language is supported by opinions and beliefs that value the central notion of social prestige related to a standard variety.
