A virulent bacteriophage of Lactococcus garvieae (formerly Enterococcus seriolicida) isolated from yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A virulent bacteriophage, designated PLgY, was detected from cultures of Lactococcus garvieae (formerly Enterococcus seriolicida) Isolated from diseased yellowtail Sel-iola quinqueradiata. The phage had an isometric head measuring 50 to 60 nm, a thin flexible tail of 7 x 140-180 nm, and the genome consisting of double stranded DNA, indicating that PLgY is a member of the family Siphoviridae. Of 26 strains of L. garvieae examined, 24 were sensitive to the phage but 2 strains of L. garvieae and another… Show more

“…Virulent bacteriophages have been isolated and used in the typing of Lactococcus garvieae strains isolated from yellowtail (Park et al 1997(Park et al , 1998. In the present study, the KG+ phenotypes of NSS9310 and MS93003 differed in phage susceptibility to PLg-16 from the KG9408 (KG-capsular strain).…”

“…However, the LD 50 of Strain MS93003, carrying fimbriae-like surface components, was similar to that of NSS9310 with no cell-surface components. The role of fimbriae-like cell surface components on L. garvieae is not yet known, and further investigation is needed.Virulent bacteriophages have been isolated and used in the typing of Lactococcus garvieae strains isolated from yellowtail (Park et al 1997(Park et al , 1998. “…L. garvieae is also a zoonotic pathogen, occurring rarely and with a low virulence in human infections (Wang et al 2007). This disease infects farmed fish during the summer when the water temperature exceeds 20°C (Park et al 1997). L. garvieae induces a fatal hemorrhagic septicemia of fish.…”

“…Three phages having different infectivities, designated as PLgY-16, PLgY-30 and PLgW-l, were used here. The were obtained from L. garvieae cultures isolated from diseased yellowtail, and the PLgW-1 was isolated from natural seawater in the previous studies (Park et al 1997(Park et al , 1998. These phages were propagated in L. garvieae strain No.…”

“…Previously, we found a virulent bacteriophage, designated as PLgY, specific to Lactococcus garvieae isolated from diseased fish, and the phage was identified as a member of the family Siphoviridae (Park et al 1997). L. garvieae strains from diseased fish were divided into 14 or more phage types by using several phage strains isolated from fish and culture environments, with a major phage type A (Park et al 1998).…”
