A Wideband Slotted Waveguide Antenna Array for Sar Systems

Abstract: Possibilities for the extension of the operational frequency band of slotted waveguide antennas are studied. It is shown that by using both conventional longitudinal slots and subarraying techniques it is possible to reach the relative bandwidth of about 15%. This result is illustrated by the development of a novel slotted waveguide antenna for high-resolution SAR applications. The antenna operates in the X-band and forms the beam of 4 • × 6 • with the gain of about 30 dB.

“…In our experiment, the tri-channel SAR system operates at Xband, the wavelength λ = 3 cm. A waveguide slot antenna array [15][16][17] with 3 sub-apertures is implemented in the system for receiving signals, thus M = 3 in our experiment. And each sub-aperture receives the echoes of the transmitted pulse from the ground cells.…”

“…A Slotted Waveguide Antenna Array (SWAA) is based on a metallic waveguide with proper dimensioned and disposed slots, typically distributed on its narrowest face [4][5][6]. SWAAs wave been widely used in navigation, radar and high-frequency communication applications because of their advantages, such as: planar, compact, and rugged construction; high gain; low loss structure; high power handle; radiation of linear polarization with very low cross-polarization levels.…”

“…Likewise, high gain slot planar arrays fed with waveguide networks have been proposed in [8] and [9] with satisfactory results. In the last years, many authors have characterized several kinds of single slot elements to obtain different radiation features and better performances in array configurations.…”
