Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of calcium carbonate-vitamin D3 in pregnant women for the prevention of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Methods. Between April 2020 and June 2021, 60 pregnant women undergoing prenatal examinations in our hospital were recruited and assigned via the random number table method at a ratio of 1 : 1 to receive conventional pregnancy care (observation group) or conventional pregnancy care plus calcium carbonate-vitamin D3 administration (experimental group). Outcome measures included blood pressure, blood calcium, the occurrence of hypertensive disorders, and adverse events. Results. The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels at delivery in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the observation group ( P < 0.05 ). Pregnant women in the experimental group had significantly higher blood calcium levels at labor than those in the observation group ( P < 0.05 ). The administration of calcium carbonate-vitamin D3 resulted in a significantly lower incidence of hypertensive disorders and adverse events versus conventional pregnancy care ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. The effect of calcium carbonate-vitamin D3 administration during pregnancy for the prevention of hypertensive disorders is significant, which effectively improves the blood calcium level of pregnant women and reduces the occurrence of adverse events, so it is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Safety of Concentrated Bioshell Calcium Oxide Water Application for Surface and Skin Disinfections against Pathogenic Microbes

Immediately post-production, commercially available bioshell calcium oxide (BiSCaO) water is colorless, transparent, and strongly alkaline (pH 12.8), and is known to possess deodorizing properties and broad microbicidal activity. However, BiSCaO Water may represent a serious safety risk to the living body, given the strong alkalinity. This study aimed to investigate the safety of BiSCaO Water for use as an antiseptic/disinfectant despite concerns regarding its high alkalinity. The change over time in pH of BiSCaO Water was measured during air contact (stirring BiSCaO Water in ambient air). When sprayed on metal, plastic, wood piece, paper, and skin surfaces, the pH of BiSCaO Water decreased rapidly, providing a white powder coating upon drying. Scanning electron microscopy images, energy dispersive X-ray elemental mapping, and X-ray diffractograms showed that the dried powder residues of BiSCaO Water were composed primarily of calcium carbonate. These results suggested that BiSCaO Water is a potent reagent that may overcome the obstacles of being strongly alkaline, making this material appropriate for use in disinfection against pathogenic microbes.

As the indispensable second cellular messenger, calcium signaling is involved in the regulation of almost all physiological processes by activating specific target proteins. The importance of calcium ions (Ca2+) makes its “Janus nature” strictly regulated by its concentration. Abnormal regulation of calcium signals may cause some diseases; however, artificial regulation of calcium homeostasis in local lesions may also play a therapeutic role. “Calcium overload,” for example, is characterized by excessive enrichment of intracellular Ca2+, which irreversibly switches calcium signaling from “positive regulation” to “reverse destruction,” leading to cell death. However, this undesirable death could be defined as “calcicoptosis” to offer a novel approach for cancer treatment. Indeed, Ca2+ is involved in various cancer diagnostic and therapeutic events, including calcium overload-induced calcium homeostasis disorder, calcium channels dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, calcium-associated immunoregulation, cell/vascular/tumor calcification, and calcification-mediated CT imaging. In parallel, the development of multifunctional calcium-based nanomaterials (e.g., calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, calcium peroxide, and hydroxyapatite) is becoming abundantly available. This review will highlight the latest insights of the calcium-based nanomaterials, explain their application, and provide novel perspective. Identifying and characterizing new patterns of calcium-dependent signaling and exploiting the disease element linkage offer additional translational opportunities for cancer theranostics.
