Accuracy Analysis of Measuring X-Y-Z Coordinates with Regard to the Investigation of the Tombolo Effect

Abstract: Tombolo is a narrow belt connecting the mainland with an island lying near the shore. It is formed as a result of sand and gravel being deposited by sea currents. In consequence, the seabed constantly rises and the shoreline moves towards the sea. This paper deals with accuracy analysis of the undertaken tombolo effect investigation, namely estimation of uncertainty of the measurement results. The aforementioned analysis concerns two methods used for creating a 3D beach model: Firstly, based on geodetic laser … Show more

“…On 23 November 2019, photogrammetric measurements of the area adjacent to the Sopot pier were carried out to investigate the unique phenomenon known as tombolo which occurs in the vicinity [24]. The study was carried out using a DJI Mavic Pro 2 UAV (Table 1) equipped with a Hasselblad stabilized visible light camera (Table 2).…”

“…However, when it comes to unmanned aerial vehicles, they are used to: determine the terrain relief adjacent to the sea shore [17,18], monitoring coastline changes [19], in research on geomorphological processes occurring in the littoral zone [20,21], or in bathymetric surveys in shallow waters [22,23]. With these tools, it is possible to investigate complex hydrological processes occurring in the littoral zone [24][25][26], which result from a variety of natural phenomena and human intervention in the ecosystem.…”

“…Coastal currents in this area that displace bottom sediments are responsible for creating links between the mainland and coastal islands or hydro-technical structures. These forms are called salient or tombolo [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ]. Tombolo or salient is an accumulative form of coastal relief closely related to the influence of coastal currents.…”

“…Results of the executed measurements of the terrain geometry are treated as random variables, that is, they are subject to statistical rules and the probability calculus is used to assess them. The term "metrological aspects" in this paper concerns the estimation of uncertainty in relation to the measurements of the sea shore and the seafloor under investigation [48]. Measurement results obtained with use of the aforementioned methods defined as TLS and UAV, respectively, create the series (clouds) of measurement points.…”
