“…Actigraphy is a reliable instrument for studying sleep-wake patterns continuously over long periods of time in outpatients with a known medical illness or insomnia [9,24]. Actigraphy is more sensitive than subjective data for documenting sleep fragmentation, particularly in patients with insomnia [25]. In validation studies, total sleep time and sleep efficiency calculated by the Sleepwatch software combined with subjective data were not significantly different from data obtained by polysomnography [10,26,27].…”

“…CONCLUSION We have shown that repeated engagement in high levels of physical activity counteracts the age-related fragmentation of the circadian rhythm. Although actigraphic assessment is of limited value in the evaluation of sleep quality in the elderly (Chambers, 1994;Hume et al, 1996), it is tempting to conclude that the training-induced improvement of the circadian timing system may be helpful in elderly suffering from those sleep problems that result from underlying circadian rhythm disturbances.…”

“…The correlation between motions and sleep states has been validated in clinical field. There is a strong correlation of 0.81 between measurement of total sleep time from actigraphy and that from PSG (Polysomnography) [19].…”
