“…Many studies endorse the positive effects of SL on the integral education of students. Furco (2003) groups these effects into six different influence spheres: - Academic and cognitive development that allows students to apply theoretical knowledge into real situations, facilitating the acquisition of contextualized learning, and at the same time, reducing the gap between theory and social practice (Brown and Bright, 2017; Ruiz-Montero et al , 2020);
- Civic development that reduces conduct problems (Chiva-Bartoll et al , 2020c);
- Vocational and professional development that fosters the acquisition of skills related with future jobs: teamwork, effective communication, management and organization (Santos-Pastor et al , 2018; Short et al , 2019);
- Ethical and moral development that fosters the acquisition of values such as solidarity, respect, etc. (Whitley et al , 2017);
- Personal development because it strengthens personal identity, self-esteem, motivation and students’ personal expectations, showing positive effects on responsibility, integrity and diversity acceptance (Meyers et al , 2014); and
- Social development , as it encourages interculturality, voluntary work and pro-social actions in students, strengthening the sense of belonging to the community and the empowerment to face social challenges (Capella-Peris et al , 2020; Sanders et al , 2019).
