Furazolidone was more active than 3-(1-methyl)-5-nitro-2-imidazolyl-methylideneamino)-2-oxazolidinone (MABN) against a series of 34 isolates of Pasteurella and 11 of Yersinia (formerly designated Pasteurella). However, the nitroimidazole was superior to furazolidone by both subcutaneous and oral routes against a series of mouse infections incited by strains of Pasteurella. It also was superior to furazolidone and sulfaquinoxaline when administered in the diet against two Pasteurella strains in a fowl cholera model infection in chickens. The good in vitro activity of MABN plus its low toxicity suggest its further study as an agent for fowl cholera and the shipping fever complex of cattle.

The nitroimidazole tested is structurally related to furazolidone in that it contains a 5‐nitro‐imidazole instead of 5‐nitrofuran. The nitroimidazole was much less active in vitro than furazolidone against a spectrum of pathogenic organisms. However, it is active in vivo by oral administration against bacterial infections of mice and its low acute toxicity gives better therapeutic indices than are obtained with furazolidone. Plasma concentrations rise rapidly following oral administration of the nitroimidazole. Sufficient urinary excretion occurred to give significant activity in a mouse kidney infection incited by Staphylococcus aureus in which nitrofurantoin was inactive.

Low Propensity for Poultry Isolates of Pasteurella multocida to Acquire Adaptive Resistance to Oxytetracycline

Thirty independently derived reference strains and clinical isolates of Pasteurella multocida were tested to determine their potential for acquiring adaptive resistance to oxytetracycline in an effort to better understand the prolonged high efficacy of the antibiotic for pasteurellosis in poultry. All reference strains and clinical isolates exhibited uniform susceptibility as measured with the broth dilution method. None of the strains or isolates readily acquired significant resistance when grown in subinhibitory oxytetracycline levels under the conditions employed. These data support the conclusions that spontaneous variation in P. multocida resulting in oxytetracycline resistance is uncommon in the field and that the organism possesses a very low propensity for acquiring adaptive resistance in response to growth in the presence of the antibiotic.
