“…However, concentrations measured in experimental human studies are 1 and 10 mg/m 3 for 1-octen-3-ol and 3-methylfran, respectively, (Wålinder et al, 2005;Wålinder et al, 2008), while in animal studies they range from 58 to more than 10,000 mg/m 3 for 1-octen-3-ol, 3-octanol and 3-octanone (Korpi et al, 1999). These are higher than levels measured indoors.…”

“…More recently, we showed that 100 ppm of volatilized 1-octen-3-ol was 80 times more toxic than toluene in human embryonic stem cells (34). Human volunteers exposed to 1.9 ppm of 1-octen-3-ol for 2 h experienced irritative symptoms, along with increases in inflammatory markers, eosinophil cationic protein, myeloperoxidase, lysozyme, and albumin in the nasal secretions (35). In this report, survival duration was truncated in Drosophila exposed to 1-octen-3-ol vapor at lower concentrations (0.5 ppm).…”

“…Three categories of MVOC were analysed, 3-methylfuran, 1-ocgten-3-ol, and TMVOC. Two of the MVOC were analysed separately because they have been demonstrated to have eVects on biomarkers in two experimental exposure chamber studies (Wålinder et al 2005, (3-metylfuran); Wålinder et al 2008 (1-octen-3-ol)). Tear Wlm break-up time was signiWcantly reduced at higher levels of 2-phenoxy ethanol only.…”

“…An association between MVOC concentrations in schools, including 1-octen-3ol (range <1-210 ng/m 3 ), and asthmatic symptoms have been reported (Kim et al 2007). One exposure chamber study using 2-h exposure to considerably higher levels of 1-octen-3-ol (10 mg/m 3 ) demonstrated an increase in NAL-MPO, NAL-ECP, and NAL-lysozyme after the exposure (Wålinder et al 2008). A recent review on 15 common MVOC concluded that there is evidence of an eVect on ocular and nasal mucosa, but the toxicological database is poor even for these compounds (Korpi et al 2009).…”
