Acute Kidney Injury: Not Just Acute Renal Failure Anymore?

Abstract: Until recently, no uniform standard existed for diagnosing and classifying acute renal failure. To clarify diagnosis, the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative group stated its consensus on the need for a clear definition and classification system of renal dysfunction with measurable criteria. Today the term acute kidney injury has replaced the term acute renal failure, with an understanding that such injury is a common clinical problem in critically ill patients and typically is predictive of an increase in morbi… Show more

“…(9,17) Scientific studies such as the present one have showed that older age and overweight were factors present in the sample who developed AKI. (10,25) The high APACHE II score can be considered a risk factor for death in patients with acute kidney injury, as well as risk for requiring dialysis (6) -a reality observed in this study.…”

“…(5) Acute kidney injury is a critical problem in severely ill patients and is usually predictive of increased morbidity and mortality. (6) It affects between 5 and 30% of patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery. (7,8) Renal dysfunction can be identified in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery, both in patients with pre-existing renal damage and in those without previous renal impairment.…”

“…The risk of CIN is greatest in patients with GFR <30 mL/mins. 11,12 The diagnostic criteria for CIN include 13 exposure to contrast agent, increase in serum level of creatinine of 0.5 mg/dL or 25%> baseline, increase in serum level of creatinine occurs 48-72 hrs after administration of contrast agent and persists for 2-5 days with other alternative major injuries ruled out.…”
