Acute Stroke

Abstract: Stroke remains one of the leading determinants of death and severe disability worldwide. It is a medical emergency with a narrow window for recognition and administration of outcome-modifying treatment in the emergency department. Ischemic stroke accounts for the majority of cerebrovascular events and revascularization therapies such as intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy are the mainstays of treatment in carefully selected patients. Intracerebral hemorrhage is less common but remains the de… Show more

“… 4 Currently, revascularization therapies including intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy remain the clinical approaches available for stroke patients. 5 However, a majority of stroke patients do not satisfy the criteria for thrombolysis and consequently, these patients tend to have residual neurological deficits. 1 It is well established that improving neurological functions by supporting neurogenesis contributes to reducing the chronic disability in stroke patients.…”

“…CT is sufficient to decide on thrombolysis in acute strokes within 4.5 h after the onset of the symptom. It remains the only mandatory radiological examination before IVT [12,13]. Noninvasive intracranial vascular imaging should also be performed in patients with suspected large vessel occlusion and who may require endovascular recanalization therapy, without delaying IV thrombolytic therapy [8,13].…”

“…Acute stroke remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, 1 and is the main cause of disability. 2 Stroke results from transient or permanent cerebral ischemia caused by arterial stenosis or occlusion, and common manifestations of this disease are focal neurological deficits.…”

“…3,4 Intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) are the 2 main treatments for revascularization. 1 Recent randomized clinical trials have shown that EVT has a strong therapeutic effect on acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusions. 5 However, damage to pig extracranial arteries, particularly endothelial cells, has been reported following EVT.…”
