Adaptation of Extra Short Duration Pigeonpea to Rainfed Semi-Arid Environments

Abstract: SU M M A R YThe adaptation of extra short duration (ESD) pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) genotypes to rainfed environments was studied on Alfisols and Vertisols at the ICRISAT Center between 1987 and 1989. Despite a slightly shorter crop duration, the grain yield of ESD genotypes was twice as large on Alfisols as on Vertisols. On both soil types, the rate of growth and grain yield were better in crops sown on time than in those where sowing was delayed. The population levels necessary to maximize yield varied among … Show more

“…These lines (MN 1, MN 5, and MN 8) flowered in 45-50 days and matured in 70-85 days at ICRISAT, Patancheru (17 N latitude), and have served as an excellent source for earliness in many breeding programs globally. ESD lines are also grown as a catch-crop (Chauhan et al 1993, Nam et al 1993, and in rice fallows in the short-rainy season in Sri Lanka (Chauhan et al 1999), India, and the Philippines. These lines are used for diversifying cereal-based crop rotations of rice-wheat cropping systems, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic plains.…”

“…Development of extra-short duration of pigeonpea genotypes has enabled them to escape the terminal drought, which short and medium duration types may experience (Nam et al, 1993). Extra-short duration pigeonpea genotypes may experience intermittent stress, as they are dependent on current rainfall, while medium and long duration types may experience intermittent as well as terminal drought (Chauhan et al, 1993). Genotypic differences in drought tolerance in pigeonpea have been reported (Lopez, et al, 1996).…”
