Adaptations in phytoplankton life strategies to imposed change in a shallow urban tropical eutrophic reservoir, Garças Reservoir, over 8 years

Abstract: This study aimed at evaluating the phytoplankton adaptive strategies of phytoplankton in a shallow urban eutrophic tropical reservoir, Garças Reservoir, over temporal and vertical scales. Samples were taken monthly for eight consecutive years (1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004) at a fixed set of depths in the water column. At the beginning, the reservoir was eutrophic with 20% of its surface covered by water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (phase I). Then, in phase II, water hyacinth grew to cover u… Show more

“…While the geometric formulas for calculation of S/V ratios and biovolumes have often been successfully applied in phytoplankton studies (e.g. Salmaso & Padisák, 2007;Crossetti & Bicudo, 2008), the S/V ratios of benthic desmids should probably be evaluated directly from the morphometric data. The original landmark configurations spanning outlines of cells may be used for approximation of their volumes and surfaces, possibly for all existing desmid shapes, but such procedures have yet to be developed.…”

“…Moreover, both species are able to develop very abundant populations or even form intense blooms (Berger, 1975(Berger, , 1989De Souza et al, 1998;Fonseca & De M. Bicudo, 2008). Occurrence of C. raciborskii with mass development of P. agardhii is known in Polish lakes (Stefaniak & Kokocin´ski, 2005;Pelechata et al, 2006;Kokocin´ski et al, 2009) but documented examples of abundant coexistence of these species are sparse Crossetti & De M. Bicudo, 2008).…”
