Adipose tissue metabolic and inflammatory responses to a mixed meal in lean, overweight and obese men

Abstract: PurposeMost of what we know about adipose tissue is restricted to observations derived after an overnight fast. However, humans spend the majority of waking hours in a postprandial (fed) state, and it is unclear whether increasing adiposity impacts adipose tissue responses to feeding. The aim of this research was to investigate postprandial responses in adipose tissue across varying degrees of adiposity.MethodsThirty males aged 35–55 years with waist circumference 81–118 cm were divided equally into groups cat… Show more

“…A similar result was reported by Jiménez‐Gómez et al (). Adipose and muscle tissues are involved in metabolism of this cytokine and they have shown sensitivity to postprandial stage and dependency on metabolic status, hence, their contributions could explain the observed results (Travers, Motta, Betts & Thompson, ). By contrast, in the MU group, SIO was more effective in IL‐6 expression decreasing in PBMC ( p = 0.017).…”

“…Adipose tissue in mammals not only acts as storage for excess of nutrients; it also acts as an endocrine organ secreting adipokines that are involved in a wide range of functions (52)(53)(54)(55). Specifically, obesity is associated with oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in adipose tissue (due to adipocytes hypertrophy and hyperplasia) with consequent increased levels of local and systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines.…”
