Adult Repellency and Larvicidal Activity of Five Plant Essential Oils Against Mosquitoes

Abstract: The larvicidal activity and repellency of 5 plant essential oils-thyme oil, catnip oil, amyris oil, eucalyptus oil, and cinnamon oil-were tested against 3 mosquito species: Aedes albopictus, Ae. aegypti, and Culex pipiens pallens. Larvicidal activity of these essentials oils was evaluated in the laboratory against 4th instars of each of the 3 mosquito species, and amyris oil demonstrated the greatest inhibitory effect with LC 50 values in 24 h of 58 µg/ml (LC 90 = 72 µg/ml) for Ae. aegypti, 78 µg/ml (LC 90 = 1… Show more

“…To alleviate these problems, major emphasis has been on the use of natural plant-based products as larvicides which can provide an alternate to synthetic insecticides [4] . Plants are rich sources of bioactive compounds that can be used to develop environmentally safe vector and pest-managing agents.…”

“…This is the first report of toxicity of catnip oil to adult flies, although previous studies have shown larvicidal activity to mosquito larvae and lower toxicity of catnip oil to small rodents. 16,17 Knock-down and mortality of stable flies treated with catnip oil are much faster than with sandalwood and amyris oils and other repellent compounds. However, at a lower dosage (2 mg), lower mortality is found from catnip oil than from other repellents including DEET and AI3-37200.…”

“…14, 15 Zhu et al 16,17 reported that catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) essential oil acts as an effective antifeedant/repellent against several filth fly species (including stable flies) and as a mosquito larvicide in laboratory assays. They also demonstrated that catnip oil is a relatively safe repellent with an extremely low toxicity in rabbits and rats.…”

“…A pesquisa com plantas medicinais de ação biocida e repelente tem apresentado resultados promissores, oferecendo assim alternativa para o desenvolvimento de produtos eficientes e de baixa toxicidade (AMBROZIN et al, 2006;PADILHA, 2002 plantas aromáticas e seus óleos essenciais (OMOLO et al, 2004;PARK et al, 2005;TAWATSIN et al, 2001;YANG & MA, 2005;ZHU et al, 2006;).…”
