Aerobic CO Oxidation of a Metal-Bound Carbonyl in a NHC-Stabilized Cobalt Half-Sandwich Complex

Abstract: The complexes [(η5-C5R5)Co( i Pr2Im)(η2-C2H4)] (R = H 1; Me 2) were synthesized in good yields via reaction of one equivalent of the N-heterocyclic carbene i Pr2Im (R2Im = 1,3-dialkylimidazolin-2-ylidene) and the bis(ethylene) complexes [(η5-C5R5)Co(η2-C2H4)2]. These complexes serve as convenient starting materials for chemistry using the [(η5-C5R5)Co( i Pr2Im)] complex fragment. The reaction with carbon monoxide leads to the carbonyl complexes [(η5-C5R5)Co( i Pr2Im)(CO)] (R = H 3; Me 4) in good to excellent … Show more

“…Three simultaneous dynamic processes are observed with increasing temperature (see Scheme ): (i) NHC rotation about the nickel‐carbon bond, (ii) allyl rotation about the Ni– η 3 ‐allyl axis, and (iii) π–σ–π allyl isomerization. Limited NHC rotation about a transition metal carbene carbon bond is often observed in NHC chemistry for half sandwich complexes . The temperature windows at which free rotation occurs mainly depends on the environment at the metal center and on the steric demand of the NHC ligand.…”

“…A related carbonate complex that comes from the aerobic oxidation of ( to form a carbonato complex was reported by Radius and co-workers [ 53 ]. This process occurs rapidly in air, both in solution and in the solid phase ( scheme 5 ).…”

“…A Berry’s pseudorotation on A would facilitate the nucleophilic attack of the superoxo ligand on a carbonyl ligand to give the peroxoacyl complex B . Such couplings have been proposed recently based on DFT calculations on a complex of cobalt,5a whereas a single precedent in osmium chemistry has been crystallographically characterized 5e. Extrusion of CO 2 , observed experimentally, would give the oxo intermediate C , in which CO insertion into the RhO bond would complete the reaction to give complex 4 .…”
