“Aerogels of enzymatically oxidized galactomannans from leguminous plants: Versatile delivery systems of antimicrobial peptides and enzymes”

Abstract: We describe aerogels obtained by laccase/TEMPO-oxidation and lyophilization of galactomannans (GM) from fenugreek, sesbania and guar. Enzymatic oxidation of GM in aqueous solution caused viscosity increase up to fifteen-fold, generating structured, elastic, stable hydrogels, presumably due to establishment of hemiacetalic bonds between newly formed carbonyl groups and free hydroxyl groups. Upon lyophilization, water-insoluble aerogels were obtained, whose mechanical properties and porosity were investigated. A… Show more

“…The laccase/TEMPO-mediated grafting of silk fibroin onto bacterial cellulose was shown to enhance the biocompatibility of the membrane [174]. The laccase/TEMPO oxidation of galactomannans led to the production of an aerogel with satisfactory drug delivery properties [175]. Similar materials were also obtained by the laccase oxidation of fenugreek gum [176].…”

“…In comparison to other approaches, the use of laccases for the reoxidation of TEMPO proved to be very mild and, promoting a lower degree of oxidations, resulted in the formation of soft gels. The properties of these materials, specifically those obtained by the LMS oxidation of guar polygalactomannanes, was recently investigated by Galante and coworkers and reported in a series of publications [61][62][63][64][65][66][67].…”
