Affective Design Patterns in Computer Games. Scrollrunner Case Study

Abstract: Abstract-The emotional state of the user is a new dimension in human-computer interaction, that can be used to improve the user experience. This is the domain of affective computing. In our work we focus on the applications of affective techniques in the design of video games. We assume that a change in the affective condition of a player can be detected based on the monitoring of physiological signals following the James-Lange theory of emotions. We propose the use of game design patterns introduced by Björk … Show more

“…Our previous preliminary research in field of AfC [36,37] led us to specify which software will be convenient for laboratory experiments. Among others, we established that such technology should facilitate recording data from several different tools simultaneously, take care of the fact that every wearable device provides another set of sensors, and save files in a convenient format (such as .CSV).…”

“…In order to evaluate the ideas related to the detection of emotions using mobile sensors, we decided to take up the area of computer games. Our approach is based on an earlier study, described in [37], which was our first attempt at using affective computing techniques in the design of video games. This was also the time when our original idea of the proposed concept for facilitating games with an affective component first sparked.…”

“…According to [20] the design concept that suits users with disabilities is challenging as we have to adhere to their affective needs. Studies on affective design have proven that the value of outcome can be increased especially on the interface design [21], [22] and interaction behavior [23]. The concept of affective design is based on [20], [21], [23], [24] that address the inclusion of feelings, thought (perception), emotion and actions.…”

“…Biosignals have been applied to videogames, with several distinct goals: (1) to adapt games to their players (adaptive game) [4]; (2) to capture the emotional state of players (affective games), providing feedback to players regarding their state [5]; or (3) to allow players to interact with games using these signals (brain-computer interfaces as game controllers) [6]. Additionally, bioelectrical signal data can be analyzed to better understand the usage of the game, its nonconscious effects on the player and the extent to which players are engaged while playing.…”
