Age of menarche in urban Argentinian girls

Abstract: A cross-sectional study in La Plata city, Argentina, yielded a mean age of menarche in 6494 schoolgirls, of 12.53 +/- 0.05 years, standard deviation 1.22 years, obtained by probit analysis. These values show a relatively early age of menarche in Argentinian girls as compared to other populations.

Both pubertal events were 1 year delayed with regard to the Argentine normal population values (Lejarraga, Castro andCuminsky 1976, Lejarraga, Sanchirico andCusminsky 1980). Two of these 17 patients had a karyotype Ann Hum Biol Downloaded from informahealthcare.com by QUT Queensland University of Tech on 11/01/14…”

“…GH provocative tests were normal, with extremely low serum IGF-I and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3. She spontaneously started puberty at 12.5 yr, reaching normal menarche at 14.5 yr (12,13). A low growth spurt, with peak height velocity of only 4.2 cm/yr (below third percentile; normal, 7.5 cm/yr for age 13.8 yr) was noted.…”

“…In our group of patients, the menarche was not delayed, mean age being: 12.4 years (normal 12.5 ± 1.2) (Lejarraga et al 1980). At that time their renal function was normal, but when the glomerular filtration rate declined, they became oligomenorrhoeic or amenorrhoic.…”
