Growth of Argentinian girls with Turner syndrome

Abstract: Growth data on 254 patients with Turner syndrome from Argentina-120 with XO karyotype and 134 with other chromosomal abnormalities-were analysed. Birth weight and height were significantly reduced. Ninety patients had received oestrogen treatment from a mean age of 14-0 years (SD 1.2) and 17 patients had spontaneous menarche. Patients who underwent spontaneous menarche had a small growth spurt. Final height was slightly higher (139.8 cm SD 5.6), though not significantly different from the mean adult height of … Show more

“…ACH references have been used for more than 20 years now, and after this period, two observations were made by pediatricians in our country: (1) Height of patients seems to be lower than USA ACH values, (2) the calculation of "z" scores and other operations at any instant age are difficult, since numeric figures were not published and consequently there was no available mathematical function for that calculations. With regards to the first observation, it is now well-known that there are differences of height, among normal population from different countries as well as in patients with some genetic disorder [7,8].…”

“…Specific growth standards for genetic disorders have been prepared for children in ACH, Turner Syndrome and other conditions [8,[10][11][12][13]31]. They are useful not only for detecting additional conditions which could affect growth, but also for estimating final height and hence evaluating the impact of growth-promoting treatments [22,31].…”

“…The exclusion criteria applied by the studies were hormone therapy (growth hormone and/or androgen [8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 1822]; estrogen [12, 18, 19]); diseases (diabetes [10, 11], hypothyroidism [10, 11], hyperthyroidism [11], polyarthritis [10], heart problems [11, 14, 18], and kidney problems [11, 14]); specific karyotypes including the Y chromosome [11, 19]; concomitant autosomal chromosome abnormalities [18]; records that did not include at least two successive annual measurements [15]; spontaneous puberty [16, 18, 20, 21]; gestational age (<37 weeks) [18]; age over 20 years [20]; lack of records about puberty [20]; highly unlikely measurements [20]; and outliers [21]. …”

“…Seven studies [810, 14, 16, 19, 20] provided the number of observations with the respective means and standard deviations by age (Table 3). Suwa [11] showed the means and standard deviations of height at each month in girls aged 0 to 20 y without and with genital bleeding.…”

“…La talla final promedio de una población de niñas argentinas con síndrome de Turner sin tratamiento fue de 137,9 cm, o sea 20 cm menos que la talla media poblacional. 15,16 Si bien no se conocen completamente las causas del retardo del crecimiento, la haploinsuficiencia d e l g e n S H O X , u b i c a d o e n l a r e g i ó n pseudoautosómica del Xp, Yp (p22.3) es una de las causas conocidas que explicaría en parte esta alteración del crecimiento. …”
